LIVE MUSIC BY THE JOLLY BEGGARS:
The Jolly Beggars bring the rich tradition of Celtic folk music and storytelling to modern day audiences. Based out of Connecticut, their traditional songs and musical arrangements have exposed many to the joys of Celtic music. They tell traditional stories from Irish folklore and intersperse their musical arrangements with traditional reels and jigs. Characterized by their tight harmonies and use of guitars, mandolin, tin whistles, octave mandolin, mandola, tenor banjo, double bass, bodhran, spoons, and more, The Jolly Beggars have quickly built a solid following and continue to spread their music around the east coast.
The band performs music that is largely Celtic in origin (Irish and Scottish), with some pieces coming from an extension of that music in other cultures.
Spawning From Boston, Mickey Rickshaw is a high energy Celtic Punk band that plays fast and loud. Heavily influenced by the New England Punk and Hardcore and Ska scenes, the band also incorporates sounds from Mediterranean folk music, Australian drinking songs, and traditional Irish melodies. Their high tempo songs range in topics from travel and wanderlust, to crumbling long time friendships, to general celebration of life and death.
Having self released three albums now, the band operates using old school DIY methods. They’ve played festivals from California to Germany, and most notably they earned stage time on Flogging Molly’s Salty Dog Cruise for three years in a row. With an upcoming Fall 2019 European Tour, Mickey Rickshaw has been said to have the most explosive live show in the genre.
LIVE PERFORMANCES BY THE STONY CREEK FIFE & DRUM CORPS:
Since its founding in 1886, the Corps has been continuously active in the civic life of the village of Stony Creek, with its influence also reaching throughout the United States as well as internationally. Its first appearance in 1887 was a performance to dedicate the Soldiers Monument atop East Rock in New Haven. Since then the Corps has appeared thousands of times, igniting the crowds as they march and play.
Each year, they participate in several events within Stony Creek; march in Branford’s Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day parades, as well as in parades and musters throughout the Northeast and beyond. In 1957, the Creek represented Connecticut in President Dwight D. Eisenhower Inaugural Parade in Washington, DC. The Corps has also made several appearances overseas. They have participated in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland and have won First Prize at the International Band Competition in Limerick, Ireland. During its long history, the Corps has won numerous fifing and drumming awards and trophies, including six Connecticut State Fifers and Drummers Association championships.
