For 20 years now, I have been known to say “It’s just beer” to people. Sometimes this catches folks off guard, and makes them think that I’m speaking negatively about the elixir I have spent half my life creating. The truth is much to the contrary.
I love beer. All beer. I have moved all over the country to make it, and have tested my wife and my family’s patience in making a career out of it. But I have learned a few things along the way that I think are important to keep in mind, especially when you hear me say, “It’s just beer”.
Beer is supposed to be fun! Sure, it’s about passion and artisanal inspiration and envelope pushing. But it’s also just as much about wetting your whistle after a good lawn mow, or sitting with the guys watching the game with a 30 pack. Beer is supposed to bring people together for a good time. It’s often the common denominator that crosses political boundaries, religious beliefs or social upbringing and helps us all to relax together with our feet propped up, sipping a cold one, having fun with friends. Whatever beer that is for you…good for you…enjoy it.
There’s also a time and a place for all beer. I love aggressive, barrel aged, sour, double dry hopped monsters as much as the next guy. But sometimes, I also love an ice cold macro beer in a plastic cup while watching my favorite team at the ball park. There is room enough for all types. There is no room for judgement.
Lastly, it’s just beer we’re talking about. We are not curing cancer, or teaching our children, or defending our country. We are making and drinking beer, the greatest liquid known to man. With a little perspective, it can be a wonderful, community supportive, attitude free liquid that can maybe cure your blues and teach you how to smile and kick the feet up.
So if you see your friend enjoying a rich complex craft brew, or a clean and light macro brew, join ‘em. But join him with whatever damn beer you feel like drinking at that moment. And toast together to the greatness of all beer. If you like, Come on down to Stony Creek Brewery and enjoy one of our beers with us. All are welcome.
